 Post subject: Cowpens - What if ....
PostPosted: Tue Jun 07, 2005 4:33 pm
For those not particularly familiar with the Battle of Cowpens, the pivotal point of the battle was the staggered withdrawal of the American right flank, in conjunction with units re-loading as they walked (for those who were not already loaded).

When the order for an about-face was given, some units were so close to the oncoming British many men had to fire from waist level.

But I've been pondering what might have happened if:
1) the American line had not bought enough time by withdrawing from the rushing British;
2) if this extra time hadn't given the Americans the chance to re-load; and
3) if the British lines hadn't become so disrupted by the momentum of their charge.

Would the British have carried the field if they had met the Americans earlier, with fewer guns re-loaded, and with British lines less disrupted?

Thoughts?
