SCAR Cavalry Conference and Tour

Cavaliers: Planning is moving forward on our November 2007 Revolutionary War Cavalry Conference. Several important things have now been nailed down...the conference is presented by Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution magazine and the South Carolina Historical Society and sponsored by Wofford College and the Cowpens National Battlefield.

It will be held at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC on Friday afternoon November 9 and all day Saturday, November 10, 2007. In addition to on-site cavalry demonstrations and tours of the Cowpens battlefield with experts on the battle, there will be pre- and post- conference bus tours offered to backcountry Revolutionary War battlefields including Kings Mountain, Ninety Six, Hammond's Store, Blackstock's Plantation, Musgrove Mill, and Wofford's Iron Works.

We will also build plenty of opportunities to fellowship with friends, learn from each other and enjoy the Carolina backcountry. Historian Gregory J. W. Erwin of Temple University has agreed to give the keynote presentation. We have many offers of presentations, as well as displays of artifacts, etc., but are still accepting and evaluating presentation proposals. We still need several key volunteers to assume responsibility for specific areas of the conference and we will need help in fundraising, publicity and marketing.

1) Coordinator to gather/prepare registration package materials for each registrant [including: local information & maps, event schedule, speakers' biographies, topical bibliography, and presenters' handouts] --

2) Volunteer to recruit and organize volunteers to man the event registration/local information desk throughout the conference --

3) Facility coordinator - set-up, decorate and clean up as required. Plan Bs – inclement weather, maintenance issues and capacity adjustments --

4) Event exhibitions & book sales/signing manager – vendor solicitation and regulation. Deal with rates and concessions --

5) Conference entertainment coordinator. Actors – music – fellowship/bar/reception opportunities --

6) Catering coordinator (all snacks, beverages and meals) -- Ginny Fowler.

7) Conference weekend VIP host, housing & transportation -- John Allison.

8) Field trip director -- -- Pre- and post- conference field trips -- David Reuwer.

9) Cavalry operations - demonstrations planning & manager and equestrian registration & hospitality -- Dan Murphy and Ron Crawley.

10) Post event publicity [event photography - Bob Yankle and Lanny Morgan]; SCAR article; and press releases --

With your help, this can be a weekend to remember. Please let me hear from you with your ideas and suggestions and volunteer spirit as soon as possible. Huzzah!
