While on a trip to the south I recently had the opportunity to visit three AWI battlefields: King's Mountain, Cowpens, and (only very briefly) Guilford Courthouse. KM was a good little hike and gives you an appreciation for the terrain (no camera- sorry!, GCH had the best collection of artifacts, but the battlefield is much reduced due to suburban sprawl (and admittedly, I was rushed), but Cowpens was a gem. Took the well laid out hike, saw the terrain (which is being restored to 18th century growth) and struck up a conversation with the ranger (the other two parks' rangers really were not interested - I had a hard time getting one away from her computer in the back office to sell me a couple of books).
He was quite a font of local knowledge and was familiar with the books on the battle and the controversies surrounding it. (How many men did Morgan actually have, being the main one.)
In any case, he game me a link to his website, which includes a ton of AWI books available onlinefor free. Also as a map geek and Google Earth aficionado, I was vastly intrigued by the work that they have done bookmarking all the sites - worldwide - that saw action during the AWI.
So clear a couple of hours, grab a sandwich and a glass of wine (or Madeira if you want to get in period) and enjoy:
