Greetings all,

I know this has been discussed before. But what the hey ...

Anybody else a little disappointed by our universal movement system? Meaning that units can move in any of the six hexagonal directions WITHOUT changing facing.

These are 5 minute turns and linear battle. Seeing our units 'sidestep' two or three hexes conjures up images in my mind from "Men in Tights" or "MP and the Holy Grail" (sorry, I watch wierd shows!).

I think infantry should only be allowed to move through the facing hexes ("For'd March" or "Left Oblique" or "Right Oblique"). Sure, this would greatly restrict mobility of the units. But it would also be more true to the tactics and capabilities of the time.

Face it, the Pandora's box of blitzkrieg is opened and we all too often think in Mobile combined arms terms. Could you possibly imagine an 18th century tactician (assuming you could find one sober) who would talk about "breakthroughs" and "encirclements" and "isolating." Maybe on the colonial side, but the majors?

We recently added the "enfilade" factor - wisely, in my opinion. But that is avioded by sidestepping or backstepping or highstepping showgirl companies who dance hither and yon at the whim of our god-like ability to minutely control the battle.

The system should do all possible to force the realities of the 18c upon us as the gamers. I grant you it was not always march up and load and fire til one side gives way - but much of it was!

Allow movement only through the facing hexes (much like line of fire) and reduce MP cost for changing facing to 1 MP per hexside.

Now that would be better, no?
