I'd like to see a battle in world history where that isn't so ...

Rats! I lost my copy.

Two references that should help.

The lost copy I refered to is an article from the Courier Magazine. They had a yearly theme on the FIW with one article specifically about this battle.

The reference is the memoirs of Cne Pouchot. A company commander from one of the regular infantry bns sent from France. He ended up being detached, and assigned to the defense of Ft. Niagara. An excellent book! I was only able to get an inter-library loan copy.

Some say 2500 French and Indians and others say 850 French & 350 Indians? Even though some of the greatest French partisan officers (LIgnary,Aubry,Langlade,Marin,Repentignay,Montigny,Vassen) where involed in this battle there is very little written about it....

Here is a link to a 'google' book.

http://books.google.com/books?id=uVAOAA ... ra&f=false

I haven't read through it too closely, but it does have some pertinent information.

Also, the relief expedition to Niagara was the bulk of troops earmarked to retake the forks of the Allegeheny and Ohio rivers. This would be a very interesting scenario with the small garrison left by Forbes in the ruins of Ft Duquesne.

I'll check my sources on that campaign to see what I can find.

Check the footnotes on page 314-15

Found it! The article from the Courier. It was a hard copy, photocopy sent to me by a fellow club member... I forgot who, but am grateful he sent it.

Bryan Dunnigan list 800 white troops and not more than 30 natives were still with de Lignery and Aubry by the time they reached the battlefield.

These would have been CfdlM (Compagnies franches de la Marine) and militia from Detroit & Illinois. The latter traveled with Aubry.

Thanks Al, so from what I have read the French Indians where present at the battle but the Iroquois convinced them not to fight so only 30 Indians fought in the battle. As for the British Indians only the Mohawks fought in the first part of the battle after the French ran all the Indians charged into the woods after them... Killed upwards of 300 men for a total of 500 French killed. if anybody wants play my version let me know....
