I have voted against my own army and went with Prussia. Frederick The Great says it all.

My initial thought would be Prussia, but I voted for France and here is my thought process. Many of the countries listed in the poll had there military "moment in the sun" during the 18th century. Prussia with Frederick the Great stands out, but it was a relatively brief (albeit spectacular) moment mid-century. Frederick's genius was widely copied, as it pertained to the use of light troops throughout European armies. However, his army was allowed to stagnate and fall apart before being ripped apart by Napoleon. The French at the beginning of the century during the Wars of Spanish Succession as well as the period right before Napoleon showed that the French army was the premier force on the continent. The combination of manpower, artillery prowess and morale tended to make the French force a determined foe regardless of whether it was in the early 18th century or during the later period. Being descended from German stock it does pain me to say that, but I believe it to be true.

I guess looking at the BIG picture, I have to go with England. Were there ever any Prussians in India? The Carrabean? Who took Gibraltar. Obviously they had a NAVY to haul them around, but it is astonishing how long the sun did not set!

Well since you white devils have not included "The People" as a choice I suppose I will have to vote for Prussia as the best white devil army of the 18th Century. The reasons would be that they consistantly defeated all opponents. They were the most professional and best trained. They were the best desciplined and everyone else tried to copy them. However put them in the woodlands against our braves and they would have gone home wigless and hairless.

I hate to admit it but I think it's a forgone conclusion that the Prussians were the best overall army, despite the fact that the French and British eclipsed them in the latter half of the 19th century. The Austrians and Russians, despite several good qualities, were too hidebound and rigid for my tastes. In the 17th century, I don't think that there is any question that it was the French, even taking into account the effectiveness of the Swedish Army during the 30 Years War.

Frederick The Great wrote the book on the art of war for the 18th century and his strategy and tactics broke all bounds for those times (On Land).
